Free Film Screening for Fair Trade Fortnight
‘Black Gold – wake up and smell the coffee’ will be screened at the Groove Cafe FREE to the Darwin community on Wednesday May 13 at 7pm.
This free screening has been organised to coincide with the Australia wide Fair Trade Fortnight (2-17 May). Fair Trade Fortnight promotes increased awareness of the importance of fair trade. Fair trade is about paying farmers a fair price for produce - enabling sustainable production and providing income security for producers.
Small-scale farmers in developing countries produce most of the world’s coffee. Supporting Fair Trade coffee is a practical, everyday way to help eradicate poverty in those developing countries.
‘Black Gold’ is a multi award winning documentary made by Nick and Marc Francis. Set in Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee, this documentary tells the story of Tadesse Meskela and his struggle to keep 74,000 coffee farmers from western exploitation. Tadesse seeks every possible opportunity for Ethiopian coffee growers to receive a fair price for their coffee on the competitive western market.
