26 JuneRehabilitation centres and human rights organisations around the world celebrate the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture on 26 June.  26 June was the day that the Convention Against Torture came in to place.  It was also the day that the United Nations Charter was signed - the first international instrument to embody obligations for Member States to promote and encourage respect for human rights.

June's Open Information Night, which falls on Wednesday 24 June, will focus on this important theme. The day reminds us that torture is a crime and provides us with an opportunity to stand united and voice our opinion against torture, a cruel violation of human rights. As Melaleuca Refugee Centre is a member of the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT), we have access to the documentary titled "My Brother's Keeper".

IRCT member centres across the globe, including Melaleuca, screened "My Brother's Keeper" - a documentary that examines the phenonemum of torture - on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on 10 December 2008.  If you missed out during Human Rights Week 2008, or wish to view this documentary again, please come along to the Melaleuca office on 24 June for a free screening.  (Please note some images and concepts are disturbing and may offend some viewers).

More information about the documentary can be found here.
