Services
Melaleuca Refugee Centre provides services to people from refugee background who have experienced torture and trauma prior to arrival in Australia. We aim to assist with recovery from trauma through incdividual support, recognising the importance of rebuilding meaningful lives and developing new networks and strengthening communities.
Melaleuca provides social and emotional support to new arrivals as well as counselling, advocacy and other therapeutic services to people who might have arrived in Australia many years ago. We are assisting approximately 250 people a year.
We offer a uniquely integrated approach by hosting a range of services and programs under the same roof. These services comprise:
- settlement: reception on arrival, orientation to the new environment, socialisation, information and referral, housing support, health and social security services;
- counselling and advocacy: holistic therapeutic approaches including counselling for torture and trauma; emotional support; psychosocial connection and advocacy; and
- community development approaches including capacity building, information sharing, community liaison and awareness.
Supporting this range of services and programs is a vibrant network of government and non-government collaborators, and a large and energetic body of volunteers who underpin Melaleuca’s support of refugees.
